The Newton Symphony Orchestra is always happy to hear from people interested in playing in the orchestra. Auditions are held in September, at the beginning of the season, for that season. In addition, auditions can be scheduled during the season, usually immediately before a Sunday evening rehearsal. We welcome enquiries for audition from advanced instrumentalists.
If, at the time you contact us, or audition, we do not have a vacancy in your section we will keep your name on our list of substitute players that we draw upon when we need extra instrumentalists for large works.
Those auditioning should be prepared to play:
Two or three orchestral excerpts and one solo piece—all of the player’s choice—preferably demonstrating ability in a variety of styles.
Sight-reading might be included in the audition, at the discretion of the music director.
The audition committee consists of the music director, the concertmaster and possibly several section leaders.
Please send us the following information to schedule an audition with the Newton Symphony Orchestra. You will be contacted by our personnel manager.
