Newton Symphony Orchestra

Welcome!

Come celebrate the NSO's 40th anniversary! This milestone season features exciting works and fabulous soloists. The season's final concert will feature Beethoven's Emperor Piano Concerto performed by Randall Hodgkinson, and Cesar Franck's Symphony in D minor.

Subscription concerts earlier in the year included a semi-staged production of Donizetti's comic masterpiece Don Pasquale, Sibelius' Symphony No. 5, and Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss, Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony, and Wieniawski's Violin Concerto No. 2.

This season also saw two special events. On November 11, the EOC went to Boston’s Symphony Hall performing our acclaimed Yellow River Cantata. On March 11, 2006 we welcomed one of America's most treasured entertainers, Garrison Keillor, host of A Prairie Home Companion and noted author of over a dozen books, for a special evening of music and humor in a benefit concert for the NSO.

The Newton Symphony Orchestra, considered one of the best community orchestras in the country, performs superb concerts for music lovers from throughout New England and has performed at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, garnering rave reviews from critics and music lovers.

This season is one of our most exciting ever and we invite you to be a part of it.

May 7 concert:
Beethoven Emperor Concerto and Franck Symphony in D minor

Subscription concert 4 will feature two great compositions, Beethoven's Emperor concerto and Franck's Symphony in D Minor.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, the composers last and possibly grandest concerto, will be performed by pianist Randall Hodgkinson. Mr. Hodgkinson's skill as a pianist is well known to local, national, and international audiences.

Belgian-born romantic composer Cesar Franck's only symphony was composed late in his career. One of the composer's best known works, it had its premier in 1889 and had a significant influence on French symphonic composition. The composition, written in a cyclic form, was controversial when first performed, but has become a well-loved part of the classical repertoire.

2006-2007 season preview

Other concertos will include the Brahms Violin Concerto and Dietter Concerto No. 2 for two Bassoons and Orchestra. Symphonies will include Schumann Symphony No.1, "Spring", Mahler Symphony No. 1, "Titan", and Dvorak Symphony No. 7.
