Welcome to the NSO's 2007-2008 Season!
Come! Listen to some great music. Our 42nd season will feature performances of works by Beethoven, Brahms, Holst, Humperdinck, Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Ravel. We will feature the Butterfly Lovers Concerto for violin and orchestra by
He Zhan-hao and Chen Gang, a composition inspired by the tale of tragic lovers who are transformed into butterflies. This performance will feature Paganini International Violin Competition winner Bin Huang.
Other featured pieces this year will include The Planets, Bolero, Rhapsody in Blue, The Pines of Rome, Beethoven's Triple Concerto, and Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony. This year we will produce a semi-staged performance of Humperdinck's opera Hansel and Gretel, and will again feature some of Newton's up-and-coming young artists from elementary, middle, and high school in the finals of the Newton's Classical Idol competition.
In addition to Bin Huang, soloists will include Michael Lewin, one of America's most gifted and charismatic concert pianists, performing the Rhapsody in Blue, and three members of the Boston Artists Ensemble, Jonathan Miller, Sharan Leventhal, and Randall Hodgkinson, in the Beethoven Triple Concerto. In Humperdinck's opera,
the role of Hansel will be sung by Leah Wool, who sang Rosina in the NSO’s Barber of Seville last January, and the role of Gretel will be sung by Joanna Mongiardo, a native of Wellesley who has lately been singing in Germany and at New York City Opera.
This year, while Maestro Rink takes a leave of absence from conducting the orchestra, we will feature a roster of four outstanding conductors: Yoichi Udagawa, James M. Orent, Beatrice Affron and Federico Cortese.
- Mr. Udagawa is the Music Director of the Cape Ann Symphony Orchestra, and the Melrose and Quincy Symphony orchestras, and is on the faculty of the Boston Conservatory of Music.
- A regular conductor of the Boston Pops, Mr. Orent is also Principal Conductor of The Boston Conservatory Repertory Orchestra. Maestro Orent was appointed Music Director of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra and Conductor of the Phillips Andover Academy Symphony Orchestra in June 2007.
- Ms. Affron has been Music Director of the Philadelphia Ballet since 1997. She conducted Philip Glass’s Akhnaten for Boston Lyric Opera in 2000 and recently received international acclaim for her conducting of the premier of Philp Glass and Mary Zimmerman’s Galileo Galilei in Chicago and London.
- Maestro Cortese is well known in the Boston area having been assistant conductor to Seiji Ozawa at the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1998 to 2003. He made his debut at Tanglewood, stepping in at the last minute to conduct Beethoven 9 for an ailing Ozawa. Additionally, he has served as Music Director of the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras since 1999 and is currently Music Director of the New England String Ensemble and Associate Conductor of the Asian Youth Symphony Orchestra.
The Newton Symphony Orchestra, considered one of the best community orchestras in the country, performs superb concerts for music lovers from throughout New England and has performed at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, garnering rave reviews from critics and music lovers.
